stop the violence

In light of the v-tech and uw shootings:

"In a tragic way, our awareness of the horrific nature of partnership violence was heightened dramatically two weeks ago. Now, it is magnified even more so. As a society and as a community, we need to continue to address issues of how violence can erupt in a relationship and identify resources to help those who may be prone to acts of violence, as well as to take even greater measures to protect potential victims of such violence. We are confronting a national epidemic of individuals doing harm to someone they know, and we must learn more about its root causes and how it can be stopped....
These are the saddest of times, and we mourn those who have lost their precious lives."

---Mark A. Emmert, President of the University of Washington ---

As a librarian, in the important business of collecting and identifying useful resources, I feel we should all have information on hand to direct people on the brink of violence to seek help instead of killing. What might have prevented the violence? More importantly what might prevent violence in the future? in your state? in your community? in your home?

Domestic relationship violence has become commonplace, a public act, and threatens lives every day. What are its causes and how can it be stopped? What role can public libraries play?
