bike to school and work (and the library) week, may 14 -18, 2007

Bike to School and Work Week is coming up, May 14 -18. Pull your bike out of the shed (if you haven't already), put some air in the tires, change the flat, and bike to school, work, or the library.

Don't have a bike? My husband and I both scored free bikes by putting a request out on our local Gallatin Valley freecycle. We had been posting our barely used baby toys, clothes, and even glass baby jars up for interested folk to give a new home to. So now we each have a bike to use. In a one car family a bike can be a great help.

About a week ago some unthinking person took my bike out of our front yard during the night and took it for a joy ride, leaving it with a popped tire and someone else's golf clubs strewn about our apartment complex. I found it the next morning and only just got it to the repair shop today. Owenhouse replaced the tire for less than $20 by 10am so its as good as new. Now my husband's bike also has a flat so we will return to fix that one later today.

All these flat tires just tell me that we need to learn how to change flats (or cough up money to have someone do it). You can learn how to change your own flats at the Free bicycle repair clinic on Tuesday May 15 at 7 pm at Summit Bike on 26 S. Grand in Bozeman.

Other Bike to School and Work Week events include a Bike Rodeo at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital on Saturday May 19 from 9am - Noon and Free breakfast for bike commuters from 7-9am at various places around town. Look at this poster/pdf to find the nearest breakfast joint near you.

Let me tell you I can't wait to get back on my bike today and ride it to work. Make everyday you can here in Montana a Bike to School or Work Day.

What a great list of resource links are tucked into this post!

On a related topic- good news, we in Big Sky can ride a bus into Bozeman, and the buses have bike racks, so we have two choices for getting around town- The Streamline bus, or under our own steam! Dylan and I recently took the bus in to see a movie at the Mall, and it was a great outing all around!
